PNG vs SVG for Print on Demand: Which to Use
For almost everything in print on demand, you want a PNG, not an SVG. A transparent, high-resolution PNG is the file Printful, Printify, Etsy, and Amazon Merch actually expect for shirts, mugs, stickers, and phone cases. SVG matters in one specific lane: cut files for Cricut and Silhouette machines, where the design gets cut from vinyl instead of printed. If you’re uploading art to a print supplier, reach for PNG and stop overthinking it. If you’re selling digital cut files to crafters, that’s when SVG earns its place. Here’s the real difference and where people get it wrong.
The actual technical difference
PNG is a raster format. It’s a grid of pixels, like a photo. Zoom in far enough and you see the squares. SVG is a vector format. It’s math, basically: lines, curves, and fills described as instructions, so it scales to any size without ever blurring.
That scaling sounds like SVG should win everything, and online comparison articles love to imply that. But print on demand doesn’t care about infinite scaling the way a logo designer does. POD cares about transparency, color accuracy, fine detail like shading and texture, and the supplier accepting your file. PNG wins on most of those for printed products.
Why PNG is the right default for POD
A few reasons PNG is the standard for print suppliers:
- Transparency that works. PNG supports full alpha transparency, so your design sits on the shirt color cleanly instead of inside a white box. That’s the single most important thing for apparel, and I broke down how to get it right in how to get a transparent background for t-shirt designs.
- It handles detail. Gradients, soft shading, photographic textures, painterly illustration. PNG keeps all of it. SVG struggles with anything that isn’t flat shapes.
- Suppliers expect it. Upload a PNG to Printify or Printful and it just works. SVG support is inconsistent across providers and print methods, and DTG printing rasterizes the file anyway.
The print process for most POD products (DTG, sublimation, UV) prints pixels, not vector paths. So even a vector file gets converted to a raster grid before it hits the garment. Starting with a properly sized PNG just skips the guesswork.
The catch that trips people up: PNG is fixed-size, so size it right
Here’s the real downside of PNG, and the thing beginners actually need to worry about (not “vector vs raster” theory). Because a PNG is a fixed grid of pixels, it has a real resolution limit. Blow it up past its native size and it goes soft and blocky.
So you have to export at the right dimensions from the start. The rough rule:
- Shirts and hoodies: 300 DPI is the target. 150 DPI can pass on large apparel, but 300 is the safe call. For a standard front print, that’s a PNG roughly 4000 to 4500 pixels on the long edge.
- Mugs, stickers, phone cases: 300 DPI is non-negotiable. These are small and viewed up close, so any softness shows immediately.

The short version: make the file big enough the first time. You can shrink a PNG without quality loss, but you can’t truly enlarge one. When SVG is actually the better choice
SVG isn’t useless. It’s the right tool when the “print” isn’t printing at all:
- Cricut and Silhouette cut files. Vinyl decals, iron-on transfers, layered paper crafts. The machine needs vector paths to know where to cut, so SVG (or sometimes DXF) is required. PNG can’t drive a cutter.
- Selling digital cut files on Etsy. There’s a whole market of crafters who buy SVG bundles to make their own shirts and signs. If that’s your product, SVG is literally the thing you’re selling, and your designs need to be flat, single-color or layered shapes, not detailed illustration.
- Simple flat logos and shapes where you genuinely need one file to scale from a sticker to a banner.
Notice the pattern: SVG wins when the design is flat and geometric and the output is a cut or a logo. The moment you want shading, texture, or photographic detail, SVG falls apart and PNG takes over.
The AI angle most guides skip
If you make designs with AI, this decides itself, and it’s worth knowing before you waste time. Image generators (Ideogram, Midjourney, Nano Banana, DALL-E, basically all of them) output raster images. They produce PNGs and JPGs, never true SVGs. They paint pixels, they don’t draw vector paths.
So if your workflow is “prompt an AI, get a design, sell it on Printify,” you are in PNG land start to finish, and that’s totally fine because PNG is what POD wants anyway. The general flow I use is in how to make print-on-demand designs with AI.
Two honest caveats:
- “AI to SVG” converters exist, and they’re hit or miss. Tools that trace a raster image into vector work okay for simple, flat, high-contrast art (think bold sticker logos). They mangle anything detailed, smearing shading into ugly blobs. If you need clean cut files, design for that from the start instead of tracing a busy AI image and hoping.
- Get the resolution high before you do anything else. Some AI tools hand you a 1024px image, which is too small for a shirt. Generate or upscale to a print-ready size, then export the transparent PNG.
Quick decision rule
- Printing on a shirt, mug, sticker, tote, or phone case at a POD supplier? Transparent PNG, 300 DPI, sized to the product.
- Selling cut files for Cricut or Silhouette, or you need one logo to scale everywhere? SVG.
- Using AI to make the art? You’re getting PNG, which is what you wanted for printing anyway.
That covers 99 percent of POD situations. The format debate is mostly noise once you realize most POD printing is raster under the hood.
